Improbable
Explorer: Giacomo Beltrami's Summer of Discovery is the story
of
a remarkable Italian visitor to this country who nearly made one of the
most important geographic discoveries of the 19th century . . . while
on
vacation! Some excerpts from a very long article that appeared in Timeline
(a
publication of the Ohio Historical Society).
The following excerpt is
from the
beginning of "Forty Bombers Headed Yours" --
Coastwatchers of the Solomons. The story appeared in The
Retired
Officer and profiled the brave men who may well have saved the day
at Guadalcanal.
Science
and Nature
These are the first four
paragraphs
of In Search of the Bigger Bubble,
a story which appeared in Boys' Life (www.boyslife.org) in
January
of 2001.
Medicine
In Dr. Beaumont's Miracle, I told
the strange story of "the man with the lid on his stomach" for American
History Illustrated.
Sports/Juvenile
These excerpts are from The Babe's Last Blast,
the little-known story of how a fat, forty and out-of-shape Babe Ruth
ended
his career in "sky-high" fashion. It was sold to Boys' Life (www.boyslife.org)
and ran there in the spring of 2001.
Travel
This article appeared in the March/April 2000 issue of Country
Discoveries.
Nostalgia
This is a typical "Flashback" column (for
1953 in this case). I put these together for each issue of Reminisce
magazine.
